As a Pakastani native, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan performed primarily in the Qawwali genre(the traditional sound categorized under the Sufi sect of Islam), following his family’s music legacy from over 600-years. At the age of 16, Khan began performing publicly, where his powerfull voice, vocal range and natural ability to perform for hours at a time brought his talent to light.
In the 90s, Khan began collaborating with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, while producing movie soundtracks. “Nusrat is one of the greatest singers of our time,” Peter Gabriel once said. “When his singing takes off, his voice embodies soulfulness and spirituality like no other.”
As an innovator, Nusrat modified the traditional Qawwali sounds to meet the interest of the younger generation. In doing so, he created his own style, forming both a new Sufi music cultural experience.
Before passing in 1997, Khan performed in more than 40 countries.
